I am Special was founded by Luani Oosthuizen and is a Registered Non-profit Non-governmental Christian-based Organisation.

Our Aim

Most of the children that they work with come from underprivileged communities. The aim is to help children realise that they are worthy and special, despite where they come from, who they are, or the circumstances that they find themselves in, because they have been created by a God who loves them.

Who we reach

I am Special works in a number of schools. Trained volunteers work in specific schools, with specific classes. Volunteers visit the learners on a weekly basis and follow a specially designed curriculum with them. The lesson is based on a Bible teaching, but also includes, social skills, language and maths skills and life skills.

Lynette Snyman says: “I love being an ‘I am Special’ volunteer. Every Friday I get to tell 240 children that they are special, because God made them and loves them. The children are always so excited to see me. Everywhere in the school I am greeted with a ‘Good morning I am Special!’ Even just by greeting me the children are reinforcing that they are special!”
